The naming of Aquatic Centre
The South China Athletic Association (SCAA) today officially named its newly completed outdoor aquatic centre in honour of SCAA swimmer and double Olympic silver and bronze medallist Siobhán Haughey in recognition of her significant swimming achievements over her illustrious career which include setting new world records, winning Hong Kong's first-ever Olympic swimming medals, multiple World Championship honours and her significant contribution to Hong Kong’s sports community.
The naming and unveiling ceremony of the SCAA Siobhán Haughey Aquatic Centre was conducted today at the SCAA, officiated by Mr. Kevin Yeung Yun-hung, Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism; Mr. Tang King-shing, Chairman of the Hong Kong Sports Institute; Dr. Hung Chao-hong Albert, President of SCAA; Mr. Lo Yun-sum Andy, Chairman of SCAA; and Ms. Siobhán Haughey. Numerous sports celebrities and distinguished guests also attended to witness this milestone moment in Hong Kong sports.
Siobhán first joined swimming classes at SCAA at the age of 4, and started training with the swimming team at 6, laying the early foundations for her swimming career. Over the years she has represented SCAA in numerous competitions, achieving remarkable results and breaking multiple Hong Kong records, as well as breaking the short course world record in the 200m freestyle. Her unprecedented achievement of winning four medals in the 2020 and 2024 Olympic Games sets a new benchmark for Hong Kong athletic achievements.
Mr. Lo Yun-sum Andy, Chairman of SCAA, stated, “The South China Athletic Association has always been committed to nurturing athletes in Hong Kong in continuously developing new talent for Hong Kong teams across a wide variety of sports. Naming the aquatic centre after our athlete, Ms. Siobhán Haughey, represents the first non-sponsored naming of a sports facility in honour of a Hong Kong athlete. This not only recognises her outstanding achievements, but also aims to inspire young athletes to follow in her footsteps in bringing future sporting success to Hong Kong.”
